Digitising the colonial and early republican sections of the Archive of the Welfare Society of Lima (EAP1049)

Aims and objectives

The archive of the Sociedad de Beneficencia de Lima Metropolitana (SBLM) has three sections: colonial, republican, and real estate titles. The objective of our project was to digitize as much material as possible from the colonial section of the SBLM. This archive is one of the most important but least used in the Peruvian capital and brings together a series of extremely diverse collections that include cemeteries, donations, pious works, hospital records and attached documents ranging from records of urban real estate, farms and precolonial sites. The vast majority of the documents are about the city of Lima and date from the 17th to the early 19th centuries.

Outcomes

The project fully digitised the following sections: Cemetery of the archive of the Welfare Society of Lima; the fraternities [cofradías] of Nuestra Señora de Aranzazu, Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria, Nuestra Señora de Copacabana, Nuestra Señora de la Concepción de Utrera, Nuestra Señora de la Misericordia y San Eloy, Niño Jesús, Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes y San José; the hospices of Huérfanos and Sevilla; the hospitals of San Lázaro (partially) and Santa María de la Caridad.
