Aims and objectives

This project aims at digitising the precious but endangered archives of Pará State Justice Court, in the Brazilian Amazon. This unique material is composed by the criminal and civil trials judged, during the 19th century, in Óbidos, 2nd largest city of this region. These trials include: estate inventories, business bankruptcies, police inquiries, runner slaves, land conflicts, etc. This material of inestimable historical value gives us access to the daily lives and struggles of the inhabitants of the Amazon during the late colony, Independence and its popular rebellions, the rise of the rubber industry, abolition of slavery and federalisation of Brazil.
