The 19th century Anglophone Press of Valparaíso, Chile (EAP1527)

Aims and objectives

This project will digitise and make globally accessible the unique collection of Anglophone newspapers published in 19th century Valparaíso, Chile. The archive is currently held by the National Library of Chile but the newspapers are endangered for both political and material reasons. These papers provide a valuable historical record of the early Republic and of the economic dominance of the British colony in South America from 1847 to 1915, including shipping, economic, political, and cultural coverage.  We will digitise 10 titles, about 3,096  individual issues, serving various readerships and preserving valuable cultural heritage that attests to early globalisation.
