Thrissur, Kerala (South India) and Immediate Surroundings (EAP1304)

Aims and objectives

Our purpose is to produce a complete catalogue and digitisation of about a half of the collection of palm-leaf manuscripts belonging to the four Śaṅkaran monasteries (madham) of the city of Thrissur, one of the foremost Hindu monastic complexes of the Indian state of Kerala. The collection, which consists of about 800 palm-leaf manuscripts, kept in precarious conditions in the library of the Vadakke Madham (“Northern Monastery”), contains rare and unpublished works in Sanskrit and Malayalam, most of which belong to the fields of nondualistic philosophy (Advaita Vedānta), Vedic exegesis, as well as Kerala history, hagiography and ritual.
