Digitising the history of a commercial and agrarian entrepôt in the Colombian Caribbean: the notary records of Ciénaga-Magdalena, 1825-1938 (EAP1447)

Aims and objectives

The main goal of this project is to rescue a valuable documentary collection for the social and economic history of the Colombian Caribbean: the Notarial Protocols of Cienaga between 1825 and 1929. The history of Cienaga's rural hinterland is linked to processes of land colonisation, the commercialisation of peasant agriculture and the penetration of corporate capitalism through investments made by the United Fruit Company. The project also seeks to raise awareness at the local level of the importance of preserving historical documentation, and improve the capacity of the Cartagena Historical Archive to digitise its own physical collections.
