Study and documentation of endangered memorial stones and inscriptions in Dharmapuri District, Tamil Nadu (EAP1503)

Aims and objectives

The project is to survey and digitally document endangered memorial stones seen in various places in four taluks in the Dharmapuri district of Tamil Nadu, to help in their preservation for posterity. The region hosts probably the largest number of memorial stones in the state, erected between the 6th and 19th Century CE. The memorial stones are an important record of the socio economic, political, religious and cultural history of the common man and of the development of both Tamil and Kannada scripts during these nearly 1400 years.
