Understanding Mandate Palestine through the publications and archive of the British School of Archaeology in Jerusalem (EAP1544)

Aims and objectives

This project will digitise 32,000 pages, photographs and drawings, representing four-hundred years of Levantine history, dating back to the 17th century. These rare materials document the Levant before modern nation-states were formed, including publications from Mandatory Palestine, when Britain was a world-leader in the nascent field of archaeology. This culturally significant collection is extremely vulnerable. Political instability has prevented access to the collection for Palestinians, and scattered the works across two locations. For some of the books, there are only a handful of copies remaining in the world. This project will reunite these collections digitally in an open-access repository.
